Coimbatore : Union Minister of State for Health and Family Welfare Ashwini Kumar Choubey inaugurated the Rotary-SRH Free Paediatric Oncology Ward, executed in partnership with Rotary International and Rotary District (3201) at the Ramakrishna hospitals today.

The Minister also inaugurated the new Elektra Linear Accelerator, a cutting-edge Radiation technology imported from the USA, and the GE-Ramakrishna Training Institute on the occasion.

Minister Ashwini Kumar Choubey has been personally invested in the “War against Cancer” a Government of India initiative and he has been travelling nationwide to encourage unique programmes and increase awareness on cancer treatment.

Among the Ministry’s own ventures is the “Chikitsa, Chikitsak Aapke Dwar” scheme, which brings at-home doctor visits to people in lower-income groups in UP, Jharkhand and Bihar, and the “Ayushman Bharat scheme”, which offers cashless hospital coverage for 10 crore vulnerable people nationwide.

Delivering his inaugural speech on the occasion Ashwini Kumar Choubey said, “On hearing the word ‘cancer’, irrespective of financial status, families are overwhelmed and shocked. Ayushman Bharat is one of the schemes to help the common man to deal with major diseases like cancer and it has benefitted a large number of people.

“However, alongside this effort of the Government, there is a need for the coming together of all sections of society including voluntary organisations and the private sector for the prevention, control and management of cancer” the minister noted.

“With this new partnership with Rotary International and Rotary District – 3201, which will provide free treatment, accommodation and food to the underprivileged children, Sri Ramakrishna Hospital will emerge as a beacon of hope for many families. This is in line with Swami Ramakrishna Paramahamsa’s vision: "service to the poor is service to God.” Ashwini Kumar said.

“The Rotary-SRH Free Paediatric Oncology Ward will provide free cancer treatments for children whose families are below the poverty line. An Elektra Linear Accelerator has been specially imported for this wing and is the third of its kind in the hospital. It provides radiation treatment in just 5 minutes, unlike the conventional 20-25 minutes. A new training institute, in partnership with GE India, aims to guide emerging professionals to handle the needs of the new ward” the minister noted.
